The Twelve Competencies of Emotional Intelligence (EI)

In an era defined by technology and the emergence of a disruptive force that looks set to change the way we work forever (AI), i'm becoming more and more committed to EQ (or EI) as a superpower we humans have that computers simply cannot compete with.

EI has four primary domains at its core in 'self-awareness', 'self-management', 'social awareness', and 'relationship management' but within this there are twelve competencies that, if mastered, can enable a person to excel both personally and professionally.

To excel, leaders need to develop a balance of strengths across the entire suite of EI competencies as when we do that, excellent business results follow. We get the best out of both self and others which in turn delivers results.

If we want to stand out in an era of technological disruption, focus on mastering EI. Start by asking yourself the following twelve questions:

  1. Am I aware of my emotions? - Do I accurately interpret and understand what I am feeling and experiencing and what emotions are connected to that feeling and experience?

  2. Can I keep my emotions under control when under stress and pressure? Am I able to regulate my behaviour and action when being tested by external factors?

  3. Can I adapt when the circumstance requires? Am I able to recognise when something different is required of me and change my behaviour in the moment to get the right outcome?

  4. Am I geared towards wanting to achieve things? Do I do what it takes to achieve an outcome even if its outside of what I might normally do?

  5. Do I have a positive outlook in life or can I adopt one when the situation requires it of me?

  6. Can I step into the shoes of another person and appreciate and recognise what they may be feeling or experiencing? Can I show compassion and understanding in the moment to someone in need?

  7. Am I alert to the situations, needs and experiences of those around me? Can I accurately read the environment I am in, in order to determine appropriate behaviour or action?

  8. Can I positively influence people to behave or act in a way that benefits them, their team, or their organisation?

  9. Do I have the ability to coach and mentor people when they are in need? Do I have the skills to help people in the moment and do I recognise when this is needed or necessary and apply it when its needed?

  10. Can I recognise and appropriately diffuse conflict when it arises? Do I have the personal toolkit of skills to calm tense situations in order to find an appropriate way forward?

  11. Can I work effectively as part of a team? Can I adjust and accommodate as needed in order for a team outcome or goal to be achieved?

  12. Can I provide the words of inspiration that will rally, energise and motivate people when in need? Can I recognise the moment when leadership is needed of me and do I have the necessary skill to engage people in a way that leads to people's buy-in and action?

Where are you weak and strong?

Is EQ (EI) something you could benefit from mastering?
