Latest Book Review: The Art of Gathering, by Priya Parker

Writer's picture: Matthew JenkinsMatthew Jenkins

Have a clear purpose – decide why it is that you’re really meeting. Commit to a bold, sharp purpose. Be specific!

Close the doors – invite only those that are needed and who can meaningfully contribute. More the merrier can in fact be, more the scarier! Ask yourself, who is this gathering for first?

Create an ‘environment’ – transport people to an alternative world. A gatherings blandness is a symptom of a disease.

Open strong – quit starting with logistics. Prepare people not things. If you want creativity, prime people in advance so they can bring their most creative selves to the table.

Encourage controversy – controversy of the right kind, and in the hands of a good host, can add both energy and life to a gathering.

End well – don’t let your gathering flicker out. Claim a specific concluding moment and finish strong!
